A Week with Giants

Published in: Click to show all news |

I spent the last week in the company of giants. The giants, people of astounding stature in the LGBT movement, and in our own Prime Timers, were all in Atlanta for the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force’s annual Creating Change conference. The conference attracted well over 3,000 attendees from across the US and the world. It is the largest gathering of LGBT activists in the world.

Prime Timers Worldwide had a booth at the conference, featuring our new full color banners and piles of past newsletters and other information to highlight our organization. Traffic at the booth was fairly steady from Thursday afternoon through Sunday morning. Many people have heard of Prime Timers, and others are impressed and want a chapter in their own cities.

There are so many reasons to be proud to be a Prime Timer. For starters, we were the first organization of older gays to spread beyond the local scene. True, many communities have had a luncheon group of cronies who got together regularly, or groups who bowled together, and there may be been local clubs who were less specialized and more diverse in their activities. But so far as I have been able to determine, Prime Timers was the first social organization to go national and eventually worldwide.

The biennial Worldwide Convention for Prime Timers will be held October 2 to 6 in beautiful downtown Columbus, Ohio. A number of our Chapter members will be attending. Although this Convention is more than ten months off, we encourage you to register as soon as possible for the best rooms and registration rates. A special Early Bird "Full Conference Registration" rate of $175 is good until February 28. This registration includes all on-site scheduled activities - workshops and meetings, two cocktail hours, two dinners, entertainment, hospitality suite, shuttle buses and more. Daily registration rates and four optional excursions to local attractions are also available to attendees.

The Travel Guys (Michael and Robert) are currently on the Fall Repositioning Cruise and took a break from their every issue travel article. So, I thought I’d come up with a few travel suggestions that you might be interested in. Some are inexpensive, and others can get pricey. So here they are.
