On a cold Sunday afternoon in February, over 60 gay/bisexual men gathered at a local library to learn about a new social group. After some informational speeches, Prime Timers Charleston SC was formed.

Chapter members from Prime Timers in Columbia, SC, attended the event in Charleston to provide mentoring and support on how to establish a chapter of Prime Timers Worldwide and what type of activities to offer. Prime Timers Charleston SC co-founders Tommy H. and Don H. shared the vision that they each had for the chapter.

That small spark of an idea has created a firestorm of activity in just five months! The chapter has grown to 55 paid members. Monthly activities include day trips to sites of interest, lunches, Wine Time (happy hour), and potlucks at a local church. The day trips have been some of the most popular activities for the chapter. Prime Timers Charleston SC has visited the Botanical Gardens in Columbia, SC, the Festival of Roses in Orangeburg, SC, Brookgreen Gardens in Murrells Inlet, SC, Beidler Forest in Harleyville, SC, and the SC Birds of Prey in Awendaw, SC. Each trip usually features a stop for lunch along the way.

The chapter received financial support for its startup marketing costs from the Circular Congregational Church in Charleston. The church provided the chapter with a grant of over $2,800 from their Mission Fund. A member of Prime Timers is also a member of the church and wrote the grant.

The chapter will use the grant funding to buy a banner, reserve a booth at Charleston PRIDE in September, bring in speakers, as well as make brochures and business cards to distribute.

"The future of Prime Timers Charleston SC is bright," said Tommy H., president of the chapter. "The attendance that we see at activities is growing and members are promoting the chapter by word of mouth."

Tommy said he is proud of each member of the Board of Directors who has stepped up to lead the fledgling organization. Two board members are planning to attend the national convention in Chicago in October.

"Each board member has a strength that we have banked on over the past few months to move this chapter forward," said Tommy. "I'm thankful to have a talented group of men that I can call a team."

The future is glowing bright for Prime Timers Charleston SC who are on the move!
