Some Personal Thoughts

There was an old TV commercial with the tag line "You've come a long way, baby." This certainly applies to many if not all the older Primetimers. A lot of you have told me stories of when they were young in the 1940's, 50's and 60's and realized they were "different" than many of their friends and family. They had to hide their true feelings. Many experienced the name calling, the violence, and the threats to their life. Some had their families throw them out because they were "different."

Myself, in that period, never experienced any of this and in fact didn't know such things went on in the world. Looking back at my childhood, I realized I had what might be called a sheltered life. I didn't, as they say, "come out" until two years ago when I was 78. Somehow I found the RI Primetimers. Everyone greeted me with open arms, accepting me for who I am. Since joining the group, I have made many friends both in Primetimers and outside the group. For that I will always be grateful and say to everyone thank you.

On June 20th, there will be a large celebration in Providence ending in a night-time parade through the downtown area. I hope many of the RI Primetimers will have the opportunity to visit our booth on the water front, then wander over to the downtown area to witness the night-time festivities and parade. Even if you do not attend any of the festivities, stop for a moment and realize all of this never would have happened in the 40's, 50's, and 60's.

So I end this as I started. We have come a long way, baby, and don't you ever forget it.
