Dial 911 in an emergency or to report information to the police. If you are not sure if you should, call 911 and let the dispatcher decide of the situation needs an emergency response. If it is determined your call is not meeting emergency guidelines, the dispatcher will give you the number you will need to call.

The emergency does not need to be occurring at the moment. It could be an auto or home break-in of last week, but just discovered. The dispatcher can quickly see where the caller is and can send a police officer to that location without giving the caller any information. For example, if someone breaks into your home in the middle of the night and you are able to dial 911, but you are afraid to talk out loud, the dispatcher can send an officer without your saying a word. BUT REMEMBER, if you are using a cell phone, you will need to give the dispatcher a location.

Don't get frustrated when the 911 dispatcher asks more details about an emergency situation after the basics are given. The frustration comes when the reporting party thinks an officer has not yet been sent because the dispatcher is still asking for details. The information has already been sent over the police radio as soon as the information is given. Do not worry when the dispatcher asks for more information.
