Over 80 Charlotte Prime Timers, entertainers, and guests attended the 20th anniversary celebration of the founding of the Charlotte Prime Timers chapter. The celebration was held Saturday evening, April 20, in the Community Center Building at Park Road Baptist Church.

The dining hall was beautifully decorated with round tables covered with linen tablecloths and a lovely mirror centerpiece on each table. Pictures taken over the last 15 years of chapter events were projected on a huge screen during the social hour. Sam Powell, President of Charlotte Prime Timers welcomed the group and invited them to enjoy a delicious buffet catered by Bistro Catering and Events.

After the meal, LaWana Mayfield, a Democrat, representing District 3 on Charlotte City Council, welcomed the group on behalf of the City of Charlotte. Michael Simmons read a letter of welcome from the pastors of Park Road Baptist Church.
Jim Thompson, former President of Charlotte Primers, served as host of the event and introduced the entertainment for the evening, which consisted of comedy and incredible singing from Drag Queen Roxy C. Moorecox; several numbers sung by Seventh Sons, an ensemble from the Gay Men’s Chorus of Charlotte; and the Brass Ensemble from the Charlotte Pride Band.

Rob Howard, President of Prime Timers Worldwide, gave the keynote address. He spoke on the history of Prime Timers, which was founded in 1987 by retired professor, Woody Baldwin and has grown to over 75 chapters worldwide. He also spoke on current Prime Timer initiatives, including housing for elderly gay men. An after-party was held at Sidelines Sports Bar.

About Charlotte
by Rob Howard

It was my pleasure to help celebrate Charlotte’s 20th Anniversary as a chapter. Even though I was moved to say that my father had once warned me “never to try to speak after a performance by a 7-foot drag queen,” the performance by the very funny and very talented Roxy C. Moorecox was great! I spoke about my favorite topic – Prime Timers – and our founding by Woody Baldwin 26 years ago. And I also talked about where we need to take the organization. We need to address reasonably priced LGBT housing, sensitive medical care, and trustworthy, caring health care providers, particularly in Long Term Care facilities.

It is my honor to visit chapters, and to help them celebrate their anniversaries. I hope to be able to visit more chapters in the coming year. Congratulations to Charlotte, and to all the other chapters celebrating significant anniversaries this year. Whether it is two years or 20, having a chapter in your community is important to every member in the club, and to your community as well.
