On May 19th, ten Prime Timers Chattanooga rode the Tennessee Valley Railroad Hiwassee Excursion train from Etowah, Tennessee round trip. Our destination was Copperhill, Tennessee, which is a historic copper mining town in the beautiful East Tennessee mountains. It turned into a real adventure. A few miles into the trip, the train encountered a fallen tree on the tracks. The crew sawed it up and we were on our way after an hour's delay. A few more miles further and now climbing the mountain, a large boulder was blocking the rails and was impossible to move, so the train had to back down the mountain.

The train encountered yet another fallen tree on the way back. This one was larger that the first one. The crew had to saw this one up which took well over an hour. These obstacles were caused by high winds and heavy rain which swept through the area the night before.

Our group had a great day despite the setbacks. We made new friends on the train and were told that we made their trip a joy! We enjoyed lunch at a riverside establishment called the Flip Flop in Reliance, Tennessee and shopping for vegetables at a nearby Mennonite Farmers Market. The railroad refunded our money, so we plan to take the trip again during the fall and enjoy the fall leaf colors.
